A lot of us have heard about SEOmoz – rightly so considering their proven track record and status within the SEO marketing industry. However, what many people don’t know is that there are a few services out there like SEOmoz in many ways that offer a free plan.
The service I’ll be introducing you to is Woorank.
The free Woorank service is a once-a-week website analysis. What I love about this service is the report it provides users which emulate that of SEOmoz. The report provides users with a breakdown of their current SEO strategy by showing them what they’ve done currently and highlights areas that can be improved. Strongly recommended to be done once a week in order to see if any of your previous week’s changes have not only taken effect but has also proved to be effective.

SEOQUAKE
SEOquake Browser Extension
When I’m doing SEO for myself or a client I’m always, always using a browser which has the SEOquake extension installed. SEOquake is the great little tool not only for SEO consultants but for the average website owner looking to improve their websites SEO. The extension provides users with a comprehensive look at on-page SEO factors at a glance by placing a toolbar below or above the web page content.
This browser extension will provide users with basic stats. I advise my clients to use this extension when looking at a potential link building website as it will show the key metrics allowing one to decide whether or not the site would be a worthwhile backlink.

Webpage Speed Test
I’m often asked by clients why I place so much weight on the web page load times. Simply put the rate at which your webpage’s load directly reflect how users will find your websites experience and plays a pivotal role in increasing or decreasing conversion rates.

There are a lot of free and paid tools readily available to help webmasters keep on top of their web page load times. However, I personally swear by web page speed tests for the unrivaled amount of metrics provided in order to help anyone from the most seasoned to noob website owners.
Not only will the web page speed test point out exact areas that need improvement but if you’re stuck attempting to improve a grade simply head over to their forums filled with website owners alike.
Screaming Frog SEO Spider
What I find tough about doing SEO is that no change made will have an immediate effect on a website. It would be highly ineffective for an SEO consultant to simply employ new changes to a current strategy and wait until major search crawlers access the website. Instead, SEO consultants and webmasters can use the Screaming Frog SEO Spider tool to crawl their website just as a search engine crawler would.
Screaming Frog is a tool I’d advise website owners to use weekly in order to monitor their internal linking, heading tags and titles. However, one thing to keep in mind is being a free version of the tool users will only be able to crawl a maximum of 500 URLS. That said being able to crawl only 500 URLS is beneficial to anyone new to SEO as it’ll be a great indication of which URLS are being crawled first – which ideally should be those you’d like to rank highest.
Open Site Explorer
If you’ve been reading up on SEO you’ve probably read about the weight placed on links in search optimizing. Links are what search engine use to determine the authority and relevancy of a web page based on the incoming linking domains, their content and the links anchor text. Open Site Explorer is a tool courtesy of SEOmoz which examines the links a certain URL has. Open Site Explorer is a free tool for the public – which surprisingly enough provides more than enough information on links pointing towards your site and those pointing outwards from your site so that an individual of any level and improve their linking strategy.
And so comes the conclusion. Each of these tools, when used on their own, have proven to be quite effective; however, of course, I’m inclined to suggest the use of all of these services together. It should be noted as well that SEO is not a one-off job and requires those handling a websites SEO strategy to be routinely updating their techniques based on search engine algorithm changes and new software.

Google Panda Update 2017

Google has announced that the latest version of its Panda Update — a filter designed to penalize “thin” or poor content from ranking well — has been released.

Google said in a post on Google+ that a “slow rollout” began earlier this week and will continue into next week, before being complete. Google said that depending on location, about 3%-to-5% of search queries will be affected.

Whether you realize it or not, google tweaks their algorithm updates constantly. Some experts have even estimated there are over 500 small updates to a given google algorithm each and every year! Of course, it will always be important to pay close attention to how SEO strategy evolves, and to play by the rules with google – but the fact is, you have to take a broader approach that sets your website up for SEO success no matter what the next google update is! With google’s most recent algorithm update, Google Panda, the world has seen some major changes in the way SEO value is attributed across the net. Instead of trying to “react” to the micro-updates Panda receives all throughout the year, check out this short list of best practices that will ensure your site is well equipped in to endure any algorithm update. These best practice strategies will give you far more benefit than simply “reacting” to every perceived strategy you can find.


Quality over Quantity: Onsite Content
Without worrying about every specific HTML tag update, or page header placement value – you can take notice of the general shift google has taken over the past few years in truly rewarding quality, original content. Making sure there is fresh content on your site constantly, also ensure that it is original to your site. Small amounts of text are okay. In fact, landing pages with one or two paragraphs of good relevant keyword-based information will do much more good for your site than pages and pages of the redundant subject matter. Keep this strategy constant, and you won’t have to worry that much about google’s updates – because you’re doing what they want anyway.

 

Relevant Varied

There’s much debate these days about the value of link building in today’s world of SEO. Either way, the verdict is still leaning pretty heavily toward the fact that link building gets’s SEO results. The fact is, forget about what the next panda update says about relevant link placement on a given page, or where your link shouldn’t be. If you are constantly building links with varied anchor text across a wide array of websites, especially relevant ones – and practicing this strategy on a constant basis…. You will see results. You may take a hit here or there, but real natural white hat link building is never going to lose its value because it will always naturally occur, even if you weren’t working at it. Natural is good.
Avoid Over-Optimization
Onsite design strategies vary, with detailed approaches like rich snippet tags and HTML modification. However, without jumping to every new micro conclusion, you can continue to work on best practices that will get SEO results in spite of any algorithm updates. Amongst the many “do’s” of onsite SEO optimization, there is a major “don’t” you simply can’t ignore: keyword “over optimization.” You may think that “the more the merrier” approach to targeted keywords will get you good results, but the fact is it will actually hurt your rankings. Use the human lens when designing content, and avoid anything that looks unnatural, such as repetitive content pages – or even repetitive amounts of the same keyword on a given page. This best practice will maintain your site’s onsite SEO value throughout any google update.

White Hat SEO
This one is a no-brainer… Things like paid linking, comment web spam, and hidden onsite keyword text are old news bad ideas. Keeping your SEO white hat with legitimate strategies like guest posting, fresh content, link building, and co-citations will always get you value no matter what the next update is. Remember, with all of these strategies; it’s about performing naturally and growing real relationships across the web. It’s as simple as realizing that you can’t “fake google out”, and shouldn’t want to. The only difference is, they’re getting better at catching the people who do.

It is a good tool for beginners. You can also use “Ubbersuggest” to get keyword ideas that make good use of Google suggest and other services on what people want and need.
2) On-Page Optimization:
Once you know which keywords represent best your business online, you need to focus on your site structure. Here you can look for free at the SEOMOZ community with a lot of insight tips.
As you know, search engines only understand the text (no flash, no images, etc.) so you need to express your ideas, and what your business is about in your URL (site address), your title, your sub-titles and the rest of your site using text.
What we have learned with 5 years of experience, is that first you need to develop the best way to teach your new users about what you do, and at the same time, you need to learn how to explain to Google how and where it should rank you in search results. These are not easy steps, but they should be done. You can see a good example in the startup MailChimp.

3) Off-Page Optimization:
Once you have everything in order, then the real work starts. This step is known as link building, but the reality is that it changes every 3 – 6 months so you should update your strategy.
In the last changes Penguin and Panda made major algorithm changes and as a result, many online businesses saw their ranking and traffic tremble. So be careful. No tricks, no magic, only hard work, and dedication.
In our own experience, it took us almost 2 years of long hours of work to make the first organic result of search engines. To earn links and place your site first at the top of the search results, you need to go out there and start to contact people, first in your niche (bloggers). Do not try to contact the big fish first (big newspapers), you will just waste your time.

Learn when and how to contact journalists to share your story and to link to you, this takes time, effort and perseverance, but it is worth it!
For us, the best technique was to tell stories, not to talk about what our product/service is about. You need to tell your audience a compelling story. We shared with our readers stories on how we started, how we developed our software, how the founders got their first funding and how we grew the business.

The Penguin algorithm update was designed to attack and de-rank a large subset of Internet website whose SEO practices were thought to use “black hat” strategies. The Google algorithm change thus went after pages and URLs that were doing three main things:

1. Stuffing their content with keywords so that it attracts search bot attention instead of focusing on giving quality to human readers
2. Spamming the Internet with back links on low-quality websites, content farms, link farms and through comment spam.
3. Monopolizing all of their backlinks and some of their content with too much use of a single keyword, resulting in a strategy that more resembles keyword spam. Since its release, Penguin has generated a lot of talks and it’s easy to get lost in the noise, forgetting what might be important. Thus, here are five distilled points you need to know that will guide you and your site through managing Penguin.

1. Penguin doesn’t embody anything new.
The policies that Penguin (and its predecessor Panda) embody and enforce are not a new change in Google policy. They have always been the desired outcome of the search giant’s index. The only difference is that they are now being more actively enforced through these two algorithms and all their updates.

In other words, Google is getting more determined to act intelligently and actively clean its search listings of what it views as low quality. Most search users who just want information that’s actually useful to them would agree with the criteria in fact.
2. It’s not the end of the world.
Despite the Clamor from many affected sectors of the Internet that would have had you thinking it was the end of the world; the Penguin updates were not as widespread, devastating or random as you might be thinking. Google released their algorithm change to address highly specific issues with the black hat tendencies of a number of websites.

They did this for the sake of improving search for their users and largely went after a specific subset of sites that were either manipulating their ranking either by tricking the search bots or by overdoing it with the keyword stuffing of content instead of actually trying to provide relevant and informative content.

If your website was not doing these sorts of things, it is very unlikely to be affected by Penguin. In fact, even the first, worst, Penguin update of April 2012 only affected an estimated 3% of the pages indexed by Google -a small percentage to be sure.
3. If Penguin did affect you, you can undo the damage.
As we’ve already said, Penguin affected highly specific SEO practices on the Internet and if you were accidentally or purposely engaging in those practices, you were probably knocked down a notch or two in the search engine rankings.

Now that you’ve been punished, you need to change what you were doing wrong, wait for the next search bot reexamination and wait as your index rank slowly creeps upwards. It will be a bit of a slow process but at least it will happen. Eventually, as long as you improve your SEO practices, you will recoup lost rank.

Flesh out your content, make it more natural and engaging to human readers; eliminate all of your low quality backlinks to any suspicious or spammy websites: where possible, get rid of exact word match anchor text backlinks and start from scratch with a new backlink campaign that’s organic, based on trust, relevance and which involves searching for quality sites with relevance to your own site in which to place your backlinks.
4. Penguin is just the beginning.
Google is getting smarter by the day and it will only be harder to keep up with black hat tactics that work, with the constant daily risk of de-ranking or even delisting hanging over your URL’s head.

The company has the interests of its hundreds of millions of search users as its bottom line, since they are Google’s bottom line and because the entire earning structure of Google -including Adwords, Adsense, and other ad formats—is dependent on a growing user base that searches based on high quality relevance in the results they get.

Google pairs its ads with those results; the higher their quality and relevance, the more Google learns. Black hat tactics are a hindrance to this basic goal. Thus, they are being squeezed ever hard and will continue to be squeezed out ever harder.
5. You need to focus on ‘white hat’ SEO and creating value.

Forget rushing your way upwards through the search engine rankings by trying to create thousands of backlinks through link farms, content sites or Blog comments; forget to try to attract the notice of search bots by writing content that was designed to trick them or feed them tons of keywords, forget about posting articles in low-quality websites that are designed mainly for search engine manipulation instead of human reader engagement.

Instead of risking this kind of catastrophic loss, just focus on the quality optimization strategies that are stable and have always worked. Focus on building valuable content, getting it noticed, getting it shared through social media and other people’s pages due to genuine interest.

Focus also on building up a series of guest posts and articles in high-quality sites that are relevant to yours, all of which link back (without exact match anchor text if possible) to relevant pages on your own website.

With this kind of long-term SEO strategy, you will be building a much more stable ranking that leaves you to worry free about future algorithm updates. You will achieve this because you’re working towards the same aims that Google has -providing quality content to Internet users.
